Thought for the Day

Even when we don't sense God's presence, His loving care is all around us.

Words to live by...

Those who seek Him will praise the Lord.  Let your heart live forever!
Psalm 22:26

Day 6 - God my Banner

Day 6 Jehovah-Nissi ---- God, my Banner or God my Standard of Victory

After Israel’s victory over the Amalekites, we are told - “And Moses built an altar and called the name of it Jehovah-nissi [The Lord is My Banner]."  Exodus. 17:15

A banner, in ancient times, was usually a bare pole with a bright shining ornament which glittered in the sun.  The word banner means to glisten.  It was a signal to God’s people to rally to Him.  It stood for His cause, His battle.  It was a sign of deliverance, of salvation.  It represented victory.

So the next time you are in heated spiritual warfare, remember that God is Jehovah Nissi. He is The Eternal God, your Banner of Victory.  We can praise Him, that He always gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

But you have raised a banner for those who fear you—a rallying point in the face of attack. Psalm 60:4 NLT

Day 5 - God who sanctifies

Day 5 - Jehovah-M’Kaddesh - God who sanctifies

You shall keep My statues and practice them; I am the Lord who sanctifies you. Leviticus 20:8

Literally, I am the Lord Who makes you Holy, Who sets you apart for My Use. The term sanctify occurs frequently in the Old Testament and its primary meaning is to set apart or separate.

“I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb.  Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5

“For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of  all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.” Deuteronomy 7:6

For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time. Hebrews 10:10

We are set apart or sanctified on the basis of our redemption in Christ.

I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one. They do not belong to this world any more than I do. Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth.  Just as you sent me into the world, I am sending them into the world.  And I give myself as a holy sacrifice for them so they can be made holy by your truth. John 17:15-19

We are God’s temple.  And He is to us Jehovah-M’Kaddesh.  He Himself makes us holy --- sets us apart for His use.  He sanctifies.  So the next time you feel unworthy to be used by God or unfit for service, remember it is not you who makes yourself worthy or fit to serve, it is Jehovah-M’kaddesh.  God, our holiness.

Day 4 - The Lord who heals

Jehovah-Rophe – The Lord who heals
"If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you." Exodus 15:26

“My wayward children,” says the Lord, “come back to me, and I will heal your wayward hearts.”  “Yes, we’re coming,” the people reply, “for you are the Lord our God. Jeremiah 3:22 NLT

"Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed." Isaiah 53:4-5

The Lord provides healing for our 'wayward hearts' and minds. Dwell on the ways He has brought healing in your life. Bring to Him your hurts and concerns.

Finding Beauty and Day 3

Day 3 of our 30 day journey is at the bottom of this post, but I wanted to share first some thoughts that I have been pondering.  This has been one of the best years for fall colors that I can remember for awhile. The oranges and yellows have been breathtaking, the reds almost stunning in some cases. The past few years everything seemed to quickly turn to various shades of brown. It has been frustrating us that we haven’t been able to get out to take pictures. The few moments of sunshine haven’t occurred when we could get out with the camera.  One of Beth’s best pictures so far is this one.

You might think we managed to sneak out to the country to snap this (note there is no hint of sunshine in the sky).  But if you look in the upper left corner you’ll see part of the Marriott West…in West County. Beth took the picture from her parking garage at work. Kind of frustrating that the best picture we have this fall is in the middle of the big city…not a scene from some winding road taken in the middle of a nice long Saturday ride.  But I’ve been thinking…it’s the same beauty, lovingly provided by the same Creator so that Beth could enjoy it every time she went in and out of the parking garage for a couple weeks.

Don’t we do that in life sometimes?  We aren’t expecting to find beauty in our routine. We think it is reserved for special places, special days, special people. But our Father desires to fill our days – even our regular, routine, go-to-work, go-to-school, clean-the-house, mow-the-yard days – with His beauty, His grace, His abundant provision and peace. But we often fail to see it because we aren’t looking for it. God has placed beauty of some sort in your life today…did you notice it?

Day 3 - Jehovah-Jireh   The Lord will provide

"Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son." Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.  So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, "On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided." Genesis 22:12-14

God is preparing an answer even before we know it is a need.

"And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:19

Dwell today on His daily provision in your life. He is faithful to provide!

30 Day Worship Journey - Day 2

El-Shaddai – God Almighty
It seems appropriate that God would identify himself as El Shaddai when he appeared to Abram at the age of ninety-nine to tell him that the time had finally come. "Almighty God". Only one who possessed all might would be able to bring this miracle to pass.

God said; "I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless. And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly."(Genesis 17:1-11).

El Shaddai is the faithful all mighty God who keeps his promise even when what he has promised is impossible. He is big enough – mighty enough – for our biggest and most impossible dreams.

Ponder this characteristic of God and allow Him to reveal Himself to you as God Almighty. Give Him praise for the mighty works that He has already done in your life.
