Our Unchanging God

On this day 27 years ago Beth was enjoying delicious pressed turkey for Thanksgiving dinner in the hospital after Emily's birth.  What an unspeakable gift from our Father, the giver of all things good. Happy Birthday Em!

Day 20 - God is immutable.

Immutable is defined as not subject or susceptible to change or variation in form or quality or nature. All that God is, He has always been.

In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain;  they will all wear out like a garment.  Like clothing you will change them  and they will be discarded.  But you remain the same, and your years will never end. Psalm 102:25-27

He remains everlastingly the same. There are no furrows on his eternal brow. No age hath palsied him; no years have marked him with the mementoes of their flight; he sees ages pass, but with him it is ever now. He is the great I AM—the Great Unchangeable. C. H. Spurgeon

“I the LORD do not change. So you, O descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.” Malachi 3:6

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17

Remember God is the same, whatever is removed. Your friends may be disaffected, your ministers may be taken away, every thing may change, but God does not. Your brethren may change and cast out your name as vile: but God will love you still. Let your station in life change, and your property be gone; let your whole life be shaken, and you become weak and sickly; let everything flee away—there is one place where change cannot put his finger; there is one name on which mutability can never be written; there is one heart which never can alter; that heart is God's—that name Love. Spurgeon

God's Wisdom

We had a good Thanksgiving service this evening. Beth and I were surprised by some friends from Ellis Grove.  We were reminded how good God has been to us over the years bringing so many good people into our lives.

Day 19 – God of Wisdom

Wisdom is knowledge coupled with just judgment. It is the employment of things known. God acts in infinite wisdom. He always acts for our good, which is to conform us to Christ. Our good and His glory are inextricably bound together.

By wisdom the LORD laid the earth's foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place; by his knowledge the deeps were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew. Proverbs 3:19-20

"To God belong wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are his. Job 12:13

How many are your works, O LORD! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Psalm 104:24

We are His workmanship, created in His wisdom. We should happily trust our daily tribulations to the One who whose wisdom is beyond measure.

All this also comes from the LORD Almighty, wonderful in counsel and magnificent in wisdom. Isaiah 28:29

Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! Romans 11:33

His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. Ephesians 3:10-11

Merciful God

If you have been following our 30 day worship journey, you know that I haven't posted for a couple days. We headed out of town Friday for a visit with my family.  The 30 day journey continues below.

We had a good trip and were able to spend Saturday with my whole family. This is the first time all of us have been together at one time in quite a few years. We celebrated my Mom's 85th birthday and had a good day of visiting and laughing (and eating).

We had two great services today. We enjoyed lots of good music for our Sunday night sing and what a blessing to have Jessie Mae Boyd at the piano. My thanks to everyone who participated.

I hope you are planning to join us Tuesday evening for the Thanksgiving service. It will be a meaningful time of worship and thanksgiving.

Day 18 - God of Mercy

Hear my cry for mercy as I call to you for help, as I lift up my hands toward your Most Holy Place. Psalm 28:2

Answer me, O LORD, out of the goodness of your love; in your great mercy turn to me. Psalm 69:16

Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon. Isaiah 55:7

Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:16

Ours is a God of mercy, slow to anger, abounding in lovingkindness. In His great mercy He has provided us a Way to come back to Him. By His mercy we don't receive the punishment we deserve. By His abundant grace we receive the life we don't deserve.  Dwell on His mercy today. Praise Him for the mercy showered upon your life.

God Our Hope

Day 17 - God our Hope

For you have been my hope, O Sovereign LORD, my confidence since my youth. Psalm 71:5

But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love. Psalm 33:18

We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. Psalm 33:20

Our God is a God of hope. Not wishful thinking but the confidence, joy and peace that comes when you know God has everything under control.

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Romans 12:12

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 5:13

Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promises. Hebrews 10:23

Unfailing Love

Day 17 - God’s unfailing love

The LORD loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love. Psalm 33:5

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul. Psalm 143:8

Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men. Psalm 107:31

"I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love. With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself."  Jeremiah 31:1

The Word became human and lived here on earth among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the only Son of the Father. John 1:14

“The appointed hour came-- I redeemed you from your sin; I made you love me; I spoke to you, and made you leave your sins and become my child; and I chose you then again.

Since that hour how often have you forgotten me! but I have never forgotten you. You have wandered from me; you have rebelled against me; yes, your words have been exceeding hot against me, and you have robbed me of my honor; but I chose you even then.

And now that I put you into the furnace, do you think that my love is changed? Am I a summer friend fleeing from you in the winter? Am I one who loves you in prosperity and then cast you off in adversity? No; hearken to these my words, you furnace-tried one; "I have chosen you in the furnace of affliction."

Do not think, then, when you are in trouble that God has cast you off. O blessed reflection! let it comfort us: his love does not change; it cannot be made to alter; the furnace cannot scorch us, but not a single hair of our head can perish. We are as safe in the fire, as we are out of it. He loves us as much in the depths of tribulation as he does in the heights of our joy and exultation.

Rejoice then, O Christian, in that God's love does not fail in the furnace, but is as hot as the furnace, and hotter still."
Charles Haddon Spurgeon

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39
